My diagnostic accuracy (Dr Jarom Leneham)
The below stats are provided to me by an independent third party, which is important to avoid bias from self-reporting. It also provides a comparison to my colleagues (as averages among the noted specialties).
These numbers should not be read into too deeply. I use them as a rough guide to ensure I'm providing excellent service to my patients, but the exact calculations used to arrive at these numbers are opaque to me. All I know is they are derived by comparing my clinical diagnosis to the histopathological diagnosis of the reporting pathologist for my surgical samples.
In particular I'd like to point out that "accuracy" can have different meanings. Specifically, when talking about diagnosing melanomas, it is important to consider two aspects: how many melanomas are being missed, and how many benign lesions are being excised unnecessarily on suspicion of melanoma. This subtlety cannot be expressed in a single number.
